🔴 Red-winged Blackbird — Species ID Dossier

That flash of scarlet on jet-black wings? Hard to miss — and even harder to forget once you know what it means.

The Red-winged Blackbird male is one of North America's most familiar birds, yet most people don't realize those shoulder patches are doing serious work. He can hide them completely when he wants to blend in, then blaze them like neon signs when a rival shows up. The intensity of his epaulet display directly influences how much territory he holds — and territory determines how many mates he attracts.

One male, up to 15 females. The math is brutal and the marsh is loud.

Card 1 — Perched Portrait Adult male on cattail: glossy jet-black body, scarlet lesser coverts, pale yellow-buff median covert bar. Six annotated field marks + female inset (heavily streaked brown, easily confused with a large sparrow). Body 7.1–9.8 in / wingspan 12.2–15.7 in.

Card 2 — Flight Views Dorsal and ventral — the epaulets ignite on spread wings, visible from 50 meters. Silhouette comparison against European Starling and Common Grackle shows how compact this bird really is.

Card 3 — Song & Call "OAK-A-LEE!" / "CONK-la-REE!" — the marsh anthem of eastern North America. Rising intro note drops into a gurgling bubbly trill. Three call types: territorial song, sharp alarm chek!, soft flight tseert.

Card 4 — Look-alike Check Three blackbirds that trip people up: Red-winged (red + yellow bar), Tricolored (deeper red + white bar, Pacific Coast only), Rusty (no epaulet, pale yellow eye, rusty fall fringes). The border bar color is the whole game.
