He was pulled out by his teenage cousin before the carbon monoxide rising from the hole — fed by a fire burning hundreds of feet underground — could kill him. That near-death in an ordinary backyard forced the country to look at what had been happening in this small Pennsylvania mining town for almost two decades: a coal seam fire, started in 1962 and quietly spreading ever since, eating the ground from below.
